How Did This Accident Occur?

The first thought people have after crashes like this is that someone was on their phone or likely going too fast. Those are very common factors, though it’s important to consider uncommon ones, as well. For all we know, this happened due to brake failure or some other unexpected mechanical issue. Whatever the case, it can help immensely to secure vehicle data as soon as possible. That’s something authorities aren’t always on top of.

I’ve been a part of literally hundreds of commercial vehicle accident investigations. Vehicle data is something that far too often slips through the cracks. It can show things like speeds, braking inputs, steering inputs, and sometimes even GPS in the moments leading up to the crash. If a driver does something wrong, this data can help show that. If something unusual happened, the data can help track down the root cause.

But if authorities move too quickly to let companies take their vehicles from the scene, if wreckage is disposed of too quickly or given to insurance companies, or if the data is otherwise mishandled, that evidence could be lost. By stepping in to preserve it early on, victims and families have better chance of getting all the answers they need. So, if authorities haven’t already stepped in to look into that, hopefully someone else can.
