Understandably, a lot of folks read about accidents like this and think, “Authorities are going to get all the facts.” It would shock people to see how often authorities let these kinds of accidents slip through the cracks.

A lot of the calls I get from people are about single-vehicle wrecks not getting proper attention. Authorities just don’t tend to dig any deeper than assuming the driver is solely responsible. That’s why I’ve had cases where they overlooked road hazards that caused the wreck. Some overlooked serious safety defects with seatbelts or airbags. A lot of people illegally over-served by bars didn’t see those bars held responsible until they called us. They can even miss seemingly obvious factors, like tire blowouts or hit-and-runs.

Ultimately, it just comes down to what their bosses prioritize, what kind of budget they have for accident reconstruction, and whether or not officers are given the time they need to do their job. The problem is victims and families might not know they’re missing crucial information until it’s too late. That’s why the folks who are more proactive early on are more likely to get the answers they deserve.
