Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After any serious crash, it’s natural to wonder not just what happened, but why it happened, and whether more could have been done to prevent it. Behind the reports and headlines are deeper questions that deserve careful attention.

Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? For a collision like this one, it’s important to know whether investigators went beyond surface-level observations. A full analysis should include careful scene measurements, vehicle positioning and a timeline built from witness statements and any nearby surveillance footage. Not every officer is trained in advanced reconstruction, and depending on staffing or time constraints, some scenes may get only a basic review. If that’s the case here, key details about how and why the vehicles collided might never come to light.

Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? When two vehicles collide, people often assume driver error was the only factor. But it’s worth asking whether something inside one of the cars malfunctioned, like brakes that didn’t respond, a steering issue or even a problem with sensors. This is especially true when newer model vehicles are involved. Unless someone does a mechanical inspection of both vehicles, especially the Toyota and the Chevrolet, there’s no way to rule out a defect that might have played a role.

Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Modern vehicles often carry a wealth of information: everything from how fast the car was going to whether the driver hit the brakes or turned the wheel before impact. Phones, dash cameras and nearby traffic cameras can also provide important clues. Without gathering and analyzing that data, it’s harder to confirm what each driver was doing in the moments that led up to the crash.

As with so many serious collisions, what’s missing can matter as much as what’s known. Digging deeper into the evidence, especially mechanical and electronic, can make all the difference in understanding where accountability lies.

Key Takeaways:

  • A detailed crash investigation should go beyond a simple police report.
  • Mechanical problems in either car might have contributed to the collision.
  • Electronic vehicle and phone data could clarify what really happened.
