Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Wrong-way driving always raises red flags, as it’s usually the result of drunk driving. Not just that, but it tends to happen when a local bar or restaurant unlawfully over-serves someone to the point they can’t tell which side of the road is which. That calls for serious investigations into the events preceding the crash and whether or not there’s a local establishment sending dangerously drunk drivers out of their doors.

At the same time, other potential unusual factors shouldn’t be ignored. Sometimes, things like poor signage, bad lighting, faulty road design, or even medical emergencies can lead to wrong-way accidents. Investigators should at least be able to definitively rule out those factors before jumping to any conclusions. Likely or not, the goal should be to investigate all possibilities and ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
