Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With single-vehicle wrecks, it’s important to ensure authorities are conducting a broad enough investigation. They often overlook all but the most likely possible factors, which is why many official investigations miss important details.

For example, any crash where someone hits the end of a guardrail warrants investigations into that guardrail. In more recent years, there have been more stories brought to light about guardrails which failed to warp and deflect around a car rather than putting all the impact on the front of the car, often resulting in the guardrail piercing the vehicle. This defect can lead to incredibly severe accidents which would otherwise be far less severe if the guardrail had functioned as intended.

Maybe nothing so unusual happened here, but it’s an example of something more prudent independent accident reconstructionists tend to look into. So if authorities aren’t looking into the guardrail’s role in this crash, it could be a red flag they’re overlooking other important factors, as well.
