Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I hear about a crash where a semi-truck overturns on an interstate ramp, my first question is, “What caused the driver to lose control?” Many people assume these incidents are just bad luck or driver error, but in my experience, rollovers like this often have deeper causes that require thorough investigation.
One of the first things investigators should examine is whether speed played a role. Highway ramps are designed for slower speeds, and semi-trucks have a high center of gravity that makes them more prone to tipping over if they take a turn too fast. Investigators should review the truck’s ECM (black box) data to determine whether it was traveling at a safe speed for the curve.
Another critical factor is cargo. Was the truck’s load properly secured and evenly distributed? I’ve seen cases where improperly loaded cargo shifted inside the trailer during a turn, throwing off the truck’s balance and causing a rollover. Investigators should check whether the freight was within legal weight limits and whether it was loaded according to proper safety standards.
Road conditions should also be considered. Was there rain, debris or uneven pavement that contributed to the loss of control? Interstate ramps can be especially hazardous if they have worn pavement or sharp turns that don’t provide enough room for a truck to recover from a slight miscalculation.
At this stage, too little is known to determine exactly what caused this rollover, but that’s why a full investigation is necessary. Simply assuming the driver made a mistake without looking at speed, cargo balance, and road conditions risks missing key details that could help provide answers for the injured driver and his family.
