Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With a multi-truck wreck like this, frankly, my concern is if authorities have the resources or the time to dedicate to gathering and preserving evidence. Accident reconstruction isn’t often a high priority for police departments. As a result, officers may lack the tools they need to do a proper investigation. In these early days, evidence is delicate and often time-sensitive. That means it needs to be examined by dedicated professionals, which often means bring in independent accident reconstructionists. Ultimately, authorities may be able to show they can handle a chaotic crash like this. In my experience, though, it’s best not to leave that sort of thing up to chance.
