Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this happen, people often assume they’re simply due to a fleeting mistake or misjudgment. However, in my experience, collisions involving large trucks are rarely straightforward and often call for a deeper look into multiple contributing factors.
One important aspect investigators may look into is whether either vehicle had any mechanical issues that could have played a role in the crash. It’s not uncommon for even minor malfunctions, like brake or steering issues, to escalate quickly into a loss of control—especially for large trucks, where even a slight issue can have severe consequences. Given that the pickup reportedly veered off the roadway, it will be essential to examine its condition for any mechanical problems that might have affected handling.
Moreover, it’s crucial that investigators consider the role of visibility and driver alertness. Collisions occurring around dawn, like this one, often involve decreased visibility, fatigue, or the presence of early-morning glare, all of which can make it challenging to gauge distances and maintain control. Both the pickup driver and the truck operator may have been affected by these factors, which could alter the dynamics of the accident.
In cases involving commercial vehicles, it’s also necessary to assess the trucking company’s role. If the truck’s condition, its maintenance, or driver training did not meet required safety standards, it may indicate shared responsibility for the incident. Commercial operators have a duty to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that their drivers are well-prepared for various road conditions.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
