Jasper, TX — November 10, 2024, Tiffany Mijares was critically injured in a crash with an alleged DWI driver on Highway 96 in Jasper.
According to authorities, the incident happened around 8:00 p.m. on Highway 96 at Hicks Street. Preliminary investigation suggests Tiffany Mijares was driving a Chevy Colorado south on the highway when a Ford Bronco turned from Hicks Street into her path. The vehicles collided in the highway’s travel lanes.
Tiffany Mijares was critically injured in the crash and was transported to an area hospital. The Bronco driver was not reported as injured. Officers alleged that the Bronco driver was driving while intoxicated.
The accident is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

People often regard preliminary crash reports as more or less “all she wrote,” but that’s rarely true. They may provide a general understanding of events, but it’s extremely rare that a few details found during a once-over at the scene really give the full context of an accident.
That actually comes up a lot after wrecks that supposedly involved alcohol, which police mentioned suspecting in the Jasper wreck above. Even if evidence confirms their theories there could be more to the story beyond a DWI. For instance, it often turns out the suspected drunk driver was illegally over-served alcohol by a local business before their accident. That over-service is a violation of Texas dram shop law, and any business that does it may be partly liable for the serious injuries its intoxicated customer causes.
To be clear, I’m not suggesting that drunk drivers shouldn’t receive harsh consequences. That choice puts everyone on the road in danger, and it’s a big part of why Texas hasn’t had a single day without a fatal road accident since 2001. I am only suggesting that everyone responsible for putting a woman in the hospital in Jasper should be held accountable for their part, including the “accomplice” that helped the driver get intoxicated in the first place (if there is one; not every DWI crash involves a dram shop violation). I hope authorities will put in the time and effort to find out.
