The teen reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to motorcycle accidents—especially those that take place in the middle of the night—people are quick to assume they were caused by rider error. I’m not so eager to make that assumption, though. Why? Because over the last three decades, I have come to believe that motorcyclists get a bad rap. I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of causes that went against the grain of stereotype ended up being unearthed by the investigation.
I’m not trying to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation, by the way. As far as I know, rider error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the wreck was a result of something gone wrong with the motorcycle itself? Motorcycles, while smaller than passenger vehicles, are still complex machines, after all. What if its excessive speed was due to brake failure or a throttle issue? True, these things are not very likely, but neither are they outside of the realm of possibilities.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the Yamaha. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck won’t be allowed to just fly under the radar. In the end, the people affected by this accident deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how and why it occurred. Surface-level investigation won’t cut it.
