Uvalde County, TX — October 19, 2024, Sylvia Hernandez was injured following a single-vehicle car accident at approximately 11:00 p.m. along U.S. 90.
According to authorities, 57-year-old Sylvia Hernandez was traveling in an eastbound GMC Yukon on U.S. Highway 90 in the vicinity southwest of Sabinal when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Yukon failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly drifted right, collided with a guardrail. It then overcorrected to the left, crossing the east and westbound lanes of the highway before crashing into a concrete barrier on the opposed side of the highway. Following that, it overturned, coming to a stop resting on its left side in the westbound lanes.
Hernandez suffered serious injuries over the course of the accident, according to reports; she was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When single-vehicle accidents result in serious injuries, it’s critical to investigate thoroughly to uncover all contributing factors. Based on my experience, identifying what led to such an incident requires addressing three key questions. First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation of the crash scene? Second, has anyone considered the possibility of a vehicle defect contributing to the accident? Finally, has all electronic data from the vehicle been collected and analyzed?
In this case, reports suggest Sylvia Hernandez’s vehicle drifted off course, struck a guardrail, overcorrected, and ultimately overturned. While these details outline the sequence of events, they leave significant questions unanswered. Did authorities investigate why the Yukon initially veered from its lane? Was the road surface checked for debris, slick spots, or other hazards that could have caused or worsened the loss of control? Without a comprehensive investigation of the scene, crucial factors might be missed.
Another vital consideration is whether a mechanical issue contributed to the accident. Single-vehicle crashes are sometimes linked to tire blowouts, brake failures, or steering malfunctions. A full inspection of the GMC Yukon is necessary to rule out such possibilities. If any defect is identified, it could indicate broader liability beyond the driver’s actions.
Additionally, modern vehicles often have electronic data recorders (EDRs) that track details like speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. This data could shed light on whether driver inputs were appropriate for the conditions or if something external influenced the vehicle’s behavior. Prompt collection of this information is critical before it becomes unavailable due to system limitations or repair work.
Accidents like this, where Sylvia Hernandez was seriously injured, demand a meticulous investigation to uncover every contributing factor. Addressing these questions helps provide a clear picture of what happened and why. For Ms. Hernandez and her loved ones, obtaining these answers is a crucial step toward clarity and closure.
