San Marcos, TX — August 2, 2024, Sammy Ferrel sustained fatal injuries due to a single-vehicle car accident at around 11:45 p.m. along I-35.
According to initial details about the accident, it happened along northbound lanes of the interstate at the intersection with Highway 80.
Investigators said that 41-year-old Sammy Ryan Ferrel was in a Ford Explorer going along I-35. The vehicle reportedly went onto an incomplete highway ramp, causing the vehicle to run off-road. It crashed onto lanes of Highway 80 below. Ferrel ultimately was killed as a result. There did not appear to be anyone else involved in the accident.

These preliminary details are a bit unusual, as accidents don’t typically involve incomplete roadways, as is described here. Was this roadway properly marked? Was the incomplete ramp clearly visible? Have people been complaining about this area, or have their been other accidents resulting from this feature? Folks might think that would be something authorities would consider, and maybe they did. But single-vehicle accidents aren’t often a high priority for a lot of departments, and that can lead them to conduct haphazard, incomplete investigations.
