Understandably, seeing reports of a wrong-way accident raises all kinds of red flags, as there are some common reasons for this sort of thing to happen. That said, common factors shouldn’t lead to hasty assumptions, as there can always be unusual contributing factors drivers aren’t able to avoid.
For example, here in Dallas one of our toll roads was seeing an unusually high number of wrong way accidents. A research team looked into this problem, and they found out the “Do Not Enter” signs on the toll road exit ramps were too high up. They were moved down, and lo and behold, the number of wrong way accidents went down.
Thanks to people actually putting in the work to let the evidence speak for itself, many accidents were likely prevented. Had they just jumped to conclusions, who knows if the problem ever would have come to light. So with crashes like this, it’s fine to consider the more common possible factors. But they should be just some possibilities among many, likely or not, that deserve attention.
