How Did This Accident Occur?
When folks see a vehicle hit a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk, the immediate assumption is that someone likely failed to yield. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that’s what happened here, though, it isn’t clear right now who did and didn’t have the right-of-way. It’ll take further investigations into multiple details to confirm that.
One thing I wonder, for example, is if authorities have looked for any nearby cameras. This could mean traffic cameras, but also residences or businesses could have security cameras with a view of the road. This evidence tends to be time-sensitive, as security systems typically overwrite old video. That means if investigators want to preserve it, they need to secure it quickly.
That may seem like an obvious piece of evidence police would go after, but I’ve had my fair share of cases where it took independent investigations to track down video evidence that authorities completely overlooked. It wouldn’t be unusual if similar steps were necessary here, as well.
