UPDATE (November 22, 2024): Authorities released more information about this accident that suggests the pedestrian was in a protected crosswalk, with a supporting walk signal, when the vehicle passed through and hit him. In some ways that changes the nature of the investigation, as police must determine why the drier of the southbound vehicle may not have stopped or yielded the right-of-way to the victim.
I’m not necessarily saying the driver did something wrong. Some reasons for the collision might be considered his fault, but others certainly wouldn’t. A routine investigation might involve looking for signs of driver mistakes like distraction or impairment, but at the same time low visibility or a set of faulty brakes could have kept the car from stopping when it should. What matters isn’t finding a direction to point fingers, just to uncover the truth and see if further steps are merited. Hopefully law enforcement plans to take the necessary time to learn the whole story, even if all it ends up providing is closure for the people who need it.
