Something that stands out to me is how authorities described the truck’s actions. They say it hopped the curb while making a right turn, but they also say the truck was making a wide-right turn. Isn’t the whole point of making a wide-right to avoid hopping the curb? So what the heck happened here?
It reminds me of a personal injury case our firm handled a while back where a truck driver caused a crash due to a lack of training. We were clued off because the crash was so easily avoidable, we weren’t sure how any halfway trained trucker would make those mistakes.
Well, the company records showed that the driver had about an hour of training—yes really. No night driving training, no bad weather driving, no hours with an experienced co-worker. They made sure he could turn the truck on and make it go, and that was that. Companies like that will just continue that kind of reckless behavior until someone holds them to account.
Just to be clear, I’m not saying anything like that happened here. For all we know, something will come to light to explain how this happened that will be entirely reasonable. But when I see authorities describe a crash like this, I can’t help but think about all the truck drivers I’ve seen involved in similar situations. It won’t surprise anyone to know few if any of those drivers were driving responsibly.
