Galveston County, TX — June 7, 2024, Patrick Payne Jr. was killed as the result of a car accident that happened just before noon along Lake Road.
According to initial details about the crash, it happened at the intersection of Lake Road and Jackson Street.

It appears that 37-year-old Patrick Payne Jr. was on a Suzuki motorcycle traveling southbound on Lake Road. At Jackson, authorities said an eastbound Toyota Corolla turned left across southbound Lake, during which the motorcycle crashed into it. Payne was killed as a result. The other driver wasn’t injured. No further information can be confirmed.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
If the images of this intersection that I’ve seen are accurate, it seems traffic on Jackson has a stop sign while traffic on Lake Road does not. Short of extenuating circumstances, that would generally result in the driver pulling through the stop sign being at fault. But the bias people often have against motorcyclists can create challenges even when a crash seems as straight-forward as can be. The more evidence there is to tell the victim’s side of the story, the less room there is for blame-shifting and bias. The question is if authorities are going through the careful accident reconstruction necessary to get that evidence or if they’re leaving the victim’s loved ones to put together the pieces on their own.
