Bell County, TX — June 3, 2024, Patience Hackney and another person were injured in a car accident shortly after 10:15 p.m. along Clear Creek Road.
According to authorities, 31-year-old Patience Hackney and a 9-year-old girl were traveling in a northbound Ford Focus on Clear Creek Road at the Stan Schlueter Loop intersection when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a southbound Jeep Cherokee attempted a left turn from Clear Creek Road onto Stan Schlueter Loop at an unsafe time, failing to yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic. A collision consequently occurred between the front-right quarter of the Jeep and the front-end of the Focus.
Hackney and the young girl both reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. They were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment.
Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a crash sends both an adult and a child to the hospital with serious injuries, the questions that follow can’t just focus on who turned and who didn’t. It takes more than a quick look at a police report to understand what really led to a collision like this.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Intersections where one vehicle is turning left and another is going straight are among the most commonly misunderstood crash scenes. Did investigators document impact angles, lane positions, and vehicle speeds? Was there an effort to confirm whether the Jeep misjudged a gap or if the Ford was traveling faster than expected? These details matter, and they don’t reveal themselves without skilled reconstruction. Unfortunately, unless someone insists, these deeper layers often go unexamined.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
It’s tempting to blame judgment alone in left-turn crashes, but mechanical issues can play a big part. Did the Jeep hesitate or surge forward due to a faulty throttle or sensor? Could the Focus have had brake issues that limited its ability to slow down? Without full mechanical inspections, these possibilities stay out of view—and with serious injuries involved, that’s not acceptable.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both vehicles likely hold crash-related data—things like speed, braking activity, and throttle use. That digital footprint can make clear whether the driver of the Jeep attempted to stop or turn, or whether the Focus had time to react. GPS records, traffic camera footage, and phone data could also help build a timeline. But this evidence doesn’t last forever. If it wasn’t gathered right away, those facts may already be slipping away.
When children are hurt and adults are left seriously injured, surface-level answers just aren’t good enough. Getting it right means going further than assigning blame—it means finding out what truly caused the crash in the first place.
Takeaways:
- Serious intersection crashes demand full scene reconstruction, not just initial reports.
- Mechanical problems in either vehicle could shift how the crash is understood.
- Electronic and digital data can confirm the precise actions leading up to the collision.
