A preliminary accident report indicates that an unknown vehicle was heading south on Hampton Road when it hit a pedestrian using an electric wheelchair at the intersection with Ledbetter Drive and continued driving.

The pedestrian, a 59-year-old man, was seriously injured in the crash, according to the report. His name has not been made public yet.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities probably are focused on finding the hit-and-run vehicle and driver after this crash, as they should. The same witness statements and available video footage that can help in an accident investigation could lead police to the suspect vehicle.

Without the vehicle, police won’t be able to download vehicle data that could show if it tried to brake or swerve before the crash.

Without the driver, it will be hard to know if distraction, fatigue or even impairment played a role in this accident.

The pedestrian and his family deserve to know as much as possible about this crash, so I hope authorities are able to track down the suspect vehicle and its driver.
