Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With single-vehicle wrecks, it’s easy for folks to assume authorities are going to get all of the facts. The reality, though, is authorities don’t often give single-vehicle accidents the attention they need. When it comes to asking questions beyond the surface-level, authorities sometimes drop the ball. That’s why it’s helpful to keep in mind some important aspects of crash investigations that thorough accident reconstructionists make sure to cover.
Are authorities equipped with the proper tools? Have they had ample training? Are they able to dedicate enough time to the crash, or are supervisors rushing them to move on to other work? Did they check the vehicle for potential defects? Did they pull any available Engine Control Module data? Have they looked at nearby homes or businesses for possible security camera video?
These are just some of the questions which I see authorities overlook all the time. That’s why it’s important that victims and families are proactive in making sure their accident is in the right hands. At the end of the day, if they feel authorities are giving them clear explanations, and they’re not left with any doubts, authorities are likely doing a good job. Otherwise, if there are still unanswered questions or answers that aren’t satisfying, a second set of eyes may be necessary to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
