Wise County, TX — April 14, 2024, Margaret Greer was injured following an alleged drunk driver accident at around 1:10 a.m. along Highway 114.

Authorities said in preliminary statements that the crash happened in the area of Highway 114 and F.M. 718, between Boyd and Aurora.

According to officials, 59-year-old Margaret Greer was in a Honda CR-V going along the highway. It appears an oncoming Toyota Avalon crossed left of center and crashed into Greer, then sideswiped a pickup behind Greer. As a result, Greer had reportedly serious injuries.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Current statements allege that the Toyota driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time. At 1:00 a.m. on a Sunday, that’s not at all surprising. These are the peak hours on the worst day for drunk driving accidents, since that’s when so many people are on their way home from bars after a Saturday night out. The question, though, is if authorities are looking into any bars in relation to this crash. If not, they may be letting someone off the hook for nearly getting a person killed.

Simply put, it’s illegal in Texas for bars and other alcohol providers to over-serve customers. If they do, it opens them up to criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and even potential liability if the over-service leads to people getting hurt or killed. People rightfully want to see accountability after a drunk driving wreck, but that has to mean accountability for all wrongdoers involved in the accident.

Besides accountability, one of the main reasons I talk about this area of the law so much is that it helps fight back against the problem Texas has with drunk driving accidents. I’ve confronted hundreds of alcohol providers over the years for their role in getting people hurt and killed. Just about every establishment that actually faced consequences cleaned up their act. That meant they weren’t continuing to put other lives in danger. When authorities fail to look beyond a crash scene, and when victims and families are left in the dark about their rights after a drunk driving wreck, a lot of those negligent establishments just keep doing business as usual until someone else inevitably gets hurt.

So regardless of what happened here, these serious allegations are enough to raise a lot of familiar red flags. It would be irresponsible to ignore those red flags just because there may be one person that’s easy to blame. People involved in these kinds of accidents don’t deserve an easy answer. They deserve to know the whole story.
