Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

In my career, I’ve had countless cases come across my desk where authorities were either too quick to jump to conclusions or unmotivated to finish their investigations, leaving gaps in the story. Single-vehicle accidents and accidents involving teen drivers make up a significant portion of those kinds of accidents.

Frankly, they’re not often seen as a high priority, and folks tend to just assume the driver must have done something wrong. But if there isn’t a thorough investigation into other possibilities, something important could slip through the cracks. Was there something in the road? Did a tire blow out? Did the vehicle have any steering or braking defects? Did the airbags go off? Did any nearby homes catch the accident on a security camera? Have authorities pulled GPS data from the victim’s cell phone? Are there signs another reckless driver caused the accident and fled the scene?

Likely or not, there are many possible reasons a crash like this can happen, and there are subtle pieces of evidence that a haphazard investigation is bound to overlook. At the very least, a victim’s loved ones deserve to know there is clear evidence to both show what went wrong and to rule out what didn’t. It’s possible authorities here have worked diligently behind the scenes to ensure that happens, that way the victim’s loved ones aren’t left with any doubts. But when folks find they still have unanswered questions or things just aren’t adding up, it could be a sign authorities didn’t really give the crash the attention it deserved.
