Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this happen, it’s easy for people to assume they result from a momentary lapse in judgment or bad timing. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks and passenger vehicles—especially rear-end collisions—often involve multiple factors that require thorough investigation. This incident on State Highway 44 is no exception.
One of the first things investigators will need to determine is why the passenger vehicle collided with the rear of the 18-wheeler. Rear-end collisions can occur for many reasons, such as distraction, impaired visibility, or sudden changes in traffic speed. Additionally, it’s crucial to assess whether the truck was properly visible and if its taillights and reflective markings were functioning as required. Poor lighting or inadequate visibility on large trucks can make it difficult for approaching drivers to react in time, especially at night.
If the 18-wheeler was operating under a commercial company, it’s also important to examine whether the company adhered to proper safety protocols regarding vehicle maintenance and driver training. Large trucks require more care when navigating the road, and any failure to maintain them could contribute to serious accidents.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to gather vital evidence, it is crucial to explore every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
