Lynda Buchanan Killed, 1 Injured in Single-car Accident on S.H. 55 in Edwards County, TX

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the pickup truck experienced tire failure which led to loss of control; it reportedly veered off of the right side of the road, coming to a stop after crashing into a tree. Buchanan suffered critical injuries over the course of the accident according to reports. The man who had been behind the wheel of the truck sustained moderate injuries, as well. They were each flown to area hospitals in order to receive necessary treatment. However, Buchanan was ultimately unable to overcome the severity of her injuries, having later been declared deceased. Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When single-vehicle accidents like this occur, particularly those involving suspected tire failure, it is crucial to ensure a thorough investigation into how and why the crash happened. While early reports suggest that a loss of control due to tire failure led to this outcome, many key questions remain unanswered. Addressing three critical areas of inquiry can help provide clarity.

First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? When mechanical failure is suspected, investigators must carefully analyze the scene and the vehicle to determine the chain of events leading to the collision. For example, skid marks, tire debris, and the vehicle’s final resting position can provide important insights into how the driver attempted to regain control and what factors influenced the crash. A comprehensive investigation should also consider whether road conditions, speed, or other external factors contributed to the severity of the accident.

Second, has anyone examined whether a manufacturing defect or maintenance issue contributed to the tire failure? Tires are critical safety components, and failures can occur for a variety of reasons, including defects in design or manufacture, improper installation, or wear and tear. Determining the exact cause of the failure requires a forensic analysis of the tire, which should include identifying whether it was subject to any recalls or if it showed signs of improper maintenance. Preserving the tire and related components for this examination is essential to understanding the root cause of the failure.

Finally, has all relevant electronic data been collected? Modern vehicles, including the GMC Sierra involved in this crash, are often equipped with event data recorders (EDRs) that can provide vital information about the vehicle’s speed, steering, and braking inputs leading up to the crash. This data could help clarify whether the driver attempted to avoid the collision and whether the vehicle’s behavior was consistent with tire failure. Additionally, any nearby surveillance or traffic cameras might provide visual evidence of the vehicle’s movements before and during the incident.

In cases where mechanical failure is suspected, a thorough investigation is essential to ensure that no contributing factor is overlooked. By analyzing the scene in detail, examining the cause of the tire failure, and securing all available electronic data, investigators can provide the clarity needed to understand what happened. For those affected by this loss, a diligent investigation is a necessary step toward ensuring accountability and helping to prevent similar incidents in the future.
