Lexington, KY — December 31, 2024, Luis Rodriguez was killed and another person was injured in a truck accident at about 6:40 a.m. on Iron Works Pike.
Authorities said a passenger vehicle and a box truck crashed head-on near Russell Cave Road.

The driver of the car, Luis Noe Hernandez Rodriguez, 38, died in the crash, according to authorities, while the truck driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the road was slick at the time of the crash, while one of the drivers may have struggled to regain control if a vehicle went off the side of the road.
The crash is still being investigated.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Head-on collisions, like the one described here, are often some of the most devastating crashes, and they raise immediate questions about how and why two vehicles ended up on a collision course. While icy roads are mentioned as a factor in this crash, determining what truly caused the collision requires a much deeper investigation.
The first area of focus should be on the role of the slick road conditions. Ice is often cited as a contributing factor in crashes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was unavoidable. Investigators will need to examine whether either vehicle was traveling at an unsafe speed given the conditions, as well as whether either driver took actions — like sudden braking or oversteering — that might have caused them to lose control.
Beyond that, the maintenance and condition of both vehicles could be a critical factor. Did the box truck or the passenger car have properly maintained tires capable of handling icy conditions? Were the brakes in good working order? Issues like worn tires or improperly functioning brakes can amplify the dangers of slippery roads and need to be thoroughly examined.
Another important consideration is whether either vehicle left its lane before the collision. Investigators will need to evaluate evidence from the crash scene, such as skid marks or debris patterns, to determine which vehicle crossed into the other’s path. If one of the drivers left their lane, the next step would be understanding why. Did a momentary distraction or fatigue play a role? Was one of the vehicles forced off the road by another factor, such as an obstruction or even another vehicle? These questions can only be answered with a complete and careful examination of the circumstances.
It’s also worth asking whether this stretch of Iron Works Pike had any known hazards that could have contributed to the crash. For instance, was this a common area for ice to form due to poor drainage or shading? Were there adequate warnings in place about icy conditions, such as road signs or alerts? If not, the agencies responsible for maintaining the road may bear some responsibility for what happened.
The bottom line is that crashes like this one are rarely the result of just one factor. Poor weather, vehicle maintenance, driver actions and road conditions all play a role in creating the circumstances that lead to a collision. Without a full investigation, it’s impossible to know how these elements came together in this specific crash and who should ultimately be held accountable for the loss of life and injuries it caused.
