Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of the biggest challenges with single-vehicle wrecks like this, quite frankly, is that the initial details from authorities can’t always be trusted. While I can’t comment on any specific details surrounding this crash, I’ve been doing car accident litigation for over 30 years. It would shock people to see how often authorities make mistakes or miss important details.
Sometimes, it’s because departments don’t give officers the time, tools, or training they need to do their jobs properly. Other times, an inexperienced officer may be left in charge of an accident beyond their ability to investigate. And sometimes, people just make mistakes. It only raises additional hurdles when the victim is seriously injured and unable to speak with officers immediately following the crash. If officers don’t follow up, their reports may not reflect the victim’s side of the story.
So while I can’t say what all happened here, it’s important to understand why these kinds of accidents are rarely simple or straightforward. It’s possible that actually getting answers will require thorough independent accident reconstructionists if there are areas where authorities came up short.
