Washington, IA — June 13, 2024, five individuals were injured following a lost load truck accident at about 10:00 a.m. along State Highway 1.
According to authorities, an 18-wheeler with a trailer loaded with “large equipment” of some sort was traveling on State Highway 1 approaching a railroad bridge when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the equipment on the truck’s trailer got caught up on the railroad bridge, causing it to fall off. It reportedly landed on a car occupied by a 61-year-old woman and four minors ages 12, 13, 15, and 17. The woman suffered apparently severe injuries and had to be flown to an area medical center in order to receive immediate treatment. The 12-year-old was also hurt badly enough that they were taken by ambulance. The other three injured minors were transported to local medical facilities for treatment of their injuries by private individuals. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

When people hear about accidents like this one, they often assume it’s a simple case of driver error. However, in my experience, I’ve found that incidents like these are rarely straightforward and require thorough investigation to understand all the contributing factors.
First, we need to determine why the equipment on the trailer got caught on the bridge. Was the load improperly secured, or was the equipment too tall to pass under the bridge safely? Securing cargo properly and knowing height restrictions are fundamental responsibilities for both the truck driver and the company. Reviewing load manifests, measuring the equipment’s height, and checking if proper securing procedures were followed can provide crucial insights.
Next, it’s essential to consider the role of the trucking company. Did the company ensure that the load complied with all transportation regulations? Trucking companies are responsible for providing their drivers with accurate information about their routes, including any height restrictions. If the company failed to provide this information or pressured the driver to take an unsafe route, they might share responsibility for the crash.
Additionally, we must examine whether the driver had adequate training and experience. Handling oversized loads requires specific skills and knowledge.
