People may be quick to write this off as just a mistake at the workplace, and it’s very possible evidence will point to that. But loading dock incidents aren’t always so cut-and-dry. It may surprise folks to learn how the property itself can contribute to accidents like this, and it’s something that warrants further attention.

I’ll give an example from a case I handled a while back. Very similar to what’s described here, a truck driver was backing up to a bay door, and he didn’t see someone behind the truck, leading to a serious accident involving a pedestrian by the dock. Well, when we took a look at the scene, it stood out to us how deep of a valley the concrete made leading up to the loading dock. Truck drivers essentially had to gun it backwards to make it through the dip without getting stuck. It was clear that sort of environment was bound to get someone hurt eventually, but the property owners either weren’t motivated to keep their workers safe or they were too inept to see the problem.

Again, maybe nothing like that happened here, but my experience with similar accidents over the years taught me to always consider that there could be more to the story. Until there’s been some sign the events here have been thoroughly considered from all angles, it’d be prudent to wait for more facts to come to light before making any judgments.
