I get calls about single-vehicle accidents like this quite often. Usually, the concern is that people feel that authorities aren’t really taking the time to fully consider the evidence and may instead be jumping to conclusions. It can be helpful in those situations to consider what questions authorities are considering. Here some key questions that are important for any crash investigation.

One of the first questions to ask is whether investigators had the time and tools necessary to properly document the scene. In single-vehicle accidents, small details—like skid marks, roadway conditions, or the final position of the vehicle—can make a big difference. If the scene isn’t carefully examined, those details can be missed.

Another important question is whether a vehicle defect may have played a role. Mechanical issues like brake or steering failure can cause a sudden loss of control. Additionally, failures in safety features like seatbelts or airbags can make injuries worse than they should have been. These types of problems are often overlooked unless someone takes the initiative to inspect the vehicle closely before it’s moved or repaired.

Lastly, was any crash-related electronic data collected? Most modern vehicles store information about speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to the crash. That data, along with any phone records or nearby surveillance footage, can help piece together what actually happened—but it needs to be gathered quickly to be useful.

If authorities are answering these questions, that’s generally a sign that they took the investigations seriously. But if these questions have gone unanswered, it could be that there need to be more thorough independent investigations to get the full story.
