While additional details can’t be confirmed right now, authorities apparently recommended multiple charges against the other driver, including DWI and failure to stop and render aid. I can’t really offer any special insight on information I’m not privy to, but any crash involving alcohol is important to take seriously. That may sound obvious, but it would surprise people how often authorities in these situations get only a part of the whole story.
For example, I had a case not long ago where a drunk driver went into oncoming traffic and nearly got a kid killed. The driver was certainly facing consequences, but our investigations found something police overlooked: the bar that served the man also broke the law. Evidence showed they over-served the man while he was clearly a danger to others due to his intoxication, meaning they were open to things like criminal charges, liability, and fines and license suspensions. But no one even knew about their involvement until our independent investigations shined a light on them.
It’s unfortunately more common than folks realize for authorities to put all of the blame on one driver and simply move on without a second thought. People harmed in accidents like this don’t just want a bad guy to blame. They want to know the whole story, and they want all parties responsible for their hardships to be held accountable. Hopefully authorities here are seeing to that.
