How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people, when they hear about rear-end car accidents, are quick to cast blame on the driver of the striking vehicle without giving it much serious thought. After over three decades in this career, I’m not so quick to jump to conclusions, though. Why? Because I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. Sometimes, things just aren’t how they appear on the surface.
That’s not to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does, by the way. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was caused by distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, the Pilot’s excessive speed could have been a result of something gone wrong with the vehicle itself rather than driver error. For example, what if it had experienced brake failure? I understand that it isn’t very likely, but neither is it outside of the realm of possiblities.
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck rather than allowing them to fly under the radar. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. After all, the people were were affected by this accident deserve to be given real answers backed by solid evidence. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
