How Did This Accident Occur?
In my experience, the most common reason two vehicles going the same direction on a highway collide is inattention. That’s why cellphones are the first thing we look into when we get to work investigating a serious car accident. But just because something is common doesn’t mean it’s the only possible factor worth considering.
For example, we also make sure there’s a thorough vehicle inspection to rule out possible vehicle defects. Faulty brakes, steering columns, tires, and even malfunctioning automatic drivings systems can lead to an unexpected, unavoidable crash. Unfortunately, that’s not something authorities tend to look into on their own, so folks might not even realize they’re missing something important unless there are independent investigators there filling in the gaps.
I’m not saying a defect led to this crash, necessarily, but it’s an example of why jumping to the most likely explanation isn’t a good idea, even if it’s often the correct explanation. Folks can come up with their own possible explanations in the comments, and I can virtually guarantee I’ve had a car accident case involving that possibility. That’s why crashes like this need as thorough an investigation as possible to let the evidence speak for itself.
