Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
While there’s not much information available yet, there are some familiar red flags that often lead to incomplete or inaccurate investigations. Did this crash ever get the attention it deserved?
Here’s why I say this. Motorcycle wrecks and single-vehicle accidents are two kinds of crashes that often lead people to jump to conclusions. With motorcyclists, a lot of folks are biased and think all motorcyclists are reckless drivers, which simply isn’t true. With single-vehicle wrecks, people rarely consider things like mechanical defects, road hazards, or medical conditions (to name a few examples). Instead they immediately blame the driver without actually having the facts.
If authorities are thorough, they can ensure the victim’s loved ones get the answers they need. Unfortunately, they, too, can share these biases, and that often leads to mistakes. Hopefully, more prudent authorities handled things to ensure the family got the answers they deserved. Otherwise, I’d hate to learn this was yet another crash that slipped through the cracks.
