Hunt County, TX — September 30, 2024, Jesus Bustillos was injured following a single-car accident shortly after 12:15 p.m. along State Highway 11.
According to authorities, 27-year-old Jesus Lechuga Bustillos was traveling in a westbound Jeep Grand Cherokee on S.H. 11 in the vicinity east of Northwood Drive when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Jeep failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left, crossing over the eastbound lane and going off of the roadway. It apparently came to a stop only after colliding with a concrete drain. Bustillos suffered serious injuries over the course of the accident, reports state. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle veers out of its lane, crosses opposing traffic, and ends up in a single-vehicle crash, the first thought is often that the driver simply lost control. But in my experience, crashes like this one warrant a much closer look. To understand how the incident happened—and whether it could have been prevented—there are three essential questions that should be asked.
First, did investigators conduct a thorough review of the road design and conditions at the time of the crash? Factors like uneven pavement, faded lane markings, or limited visibility can all contribute to a vehicle unintentionally leaving its lane. Evaluating the physical environment is critical to determining whether the roadway itself played a role in the driver’s departure from the travel lane.
Second, has anyone considered whether a mechanical failure within the Jeep Grand Cherokee contributed to the crash? A sudden issue with the steering system, tires, or brakes could cause a vehicle to veer without warning, and these malfunctions may not be immediately obvious without a detailed forensic inspection. If the vehicle is quickly repaired or scrapped, opportunities to detect such issues are lost.
Lastly, has the vehicle’s electronic data been preserved and analyzed? Modern vehicles like the Grand Cherokee typically contain event data recorders that log key pre-crash information—such as speed, steering angle, brake application, and throttle input. This data can help clarify whether the driver made any attempts to avoid the crash or if the vehicle failed to respond properly.
When someone is seriously hurt in a crash and the cause remains uncertain, a complete investigation is necessary—not just for accountability, but to ensure no contributing factor goes unnoticed. Asking these questions is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by this crash get the clarity and closure they deserve.
