Spring, TX — April 11, 2024, Jerry Petty was injured as the result of an alleged drunk driver accident at 11:00 p.m. along F.M. 2920.
According to officials, the incident happened at the intersection of F.M. 2920 and Gosling Road.
It appears that 76-year-old Jerry Petty was in a Ford Flex on westbound lanes of F.M. 2920. Petty was reportedly stopped at the light at the time when Chevy Impala crashed into him from behind. The Chevy then fled the scene, but authorities apparently apprehended that driver.

Petty reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries due to the wreck. The Chevy driver was reportedly under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened. Harris County officials have so far confirmed pending charges for failure to stop and render aid. Other potential charges are unclear right now.

If all the allegations here are true, it wouldn’t be surprising if the runaway driver was drunk. That’s a common reason folks flee the scene. Catching the driver as soon as they apparently did can be crucial not just for proving they were intoxicated but also finding out where they got their alcohol. If authorities find that a local bar or a similar establishment illegally over-served the driver, they, too, could find themselves subject to criminal investigations.
Unfortunately, 30 years of handling alcohol-related accidents has shown me authorities are far less motivated to seek out negligent bars than they are to put drunk drivers in jail. I recall too many times where criminal investigations only happened after we gave evidence to authorities after conducting our own investigations for a personal injury case against the alcohol provider. Sometimes, authorities still wouldn’t take any action. So while it’s encouraging that one person allegedly responsible for all of this will answer for their actions, it would be shame if it turned out authorities were letting someone else off the hook.
