How Did This Accident Occur?

This early in the morning when it’s dark out, a disabled vehicle on the freeway can certainly be a serious hazard. A key question, though, is if that vehicle was reasonably avoidable.

Simply put, if a vehicle is clearly visible to approaching motorists, those drivers have a responsibility to slow down or go around the stationary car. A driver who fails to do so raises red flags for things like fatigued driving, distraction, unsafe speeds, or even possible intoxication. However, if someone breaks down and doesn’t put on their hazards, or if their vehicle breaks down for foreseeable and avoidable reasons (neglected maintenance or running out of gas, for example), then drivers crashing into that vehicle may not have done anything wrong.

So, was the disabled vehicle involved in this crash avoidable? Have authorities spoken to any independent witnesses? Is there any video of this crash from a dashcam or a traffic camera? Getting these answers could take a lot more work than a typical police investigation covers. Hopefully the right people are looking into things, or else important information could slip through the cracks.

Did anyone see this disabled vehicle prior to the crash? Was it avoidable? Let me know in the comments if you saw anything.
