Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes involve multiple vehicles and leave someone seriously hurt, there’s a lot that needs to be done to ensure the facts are clear. That starts with asking the right questions early—especially when not all details are confirmed up front.
1. Did authorities do a full investigation of how each vehicle entered the intersection?
In multi-vehicle collisions like this, investigators should thoroughly document where each vehicle was coming from, who had the right of way, and what traffic controls were in place. If they didn’t do that, the rest of the case can be built on assumptions.
2. Were the vehicles inspected for any possible defects or mechanical issues?
Sometimes crashes are influenced by things like brake failure, steering issues, or tire blowouts. Those possibilities need to be ruled out with physical inspections, especially if any drivers said their vehicles weren’t functioning properly.
3. Was electronic data from the vehicles recovered and analyzed?
Modern vehicles can provide key information like speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. That data often supports or challenges witness accounts, and preserving it early can make a major difference in understanding what actually happened.
Even when one person is seriously hurt, the big picture matters. Without clear answers to these questions, it’s easy for key facts to slip through the cracks.
