Orange, TX — October 7, 2024, James Valdez was killed as the result of a motorcycle accident at around 9:25 p.m. along I-10.
According to preliminary statements, the accident happened along eastbound lanes of the interstate near the exit for Highway 87.

Investigators said that 44-year-old James Joseph Valdez was on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle going along I-10. The motorcycle was apparently between two 18-wheelers and changed lanes behind a third 18-wheeler. It appears the motorcycle struck a piece of lumber in the roadway, causing the bike to lose control. It veered out of its lane, then crashed along the guardrail.
Due to the crash, James Valdez was killed. There did not appear to be any other injuries. No further information is available right now.

I talk a lot about the dangers motorcyclists have to face particularly because people tend to want to blame motorcyclists. They assume all riders are dangerous even though many are safe drivers. Hitting something in the road isn’t exactly easy to avoid, especially if there is traffic obscuring the road ahead. It’s important, then, to consider if authorities looked into where this object came from. While not always possible, there could be evidence to help identify a vehicle the object came from, and investigations could show that the object was from a truck that didn’t secure its cargo sufficiently. It wouldn’t be right to just dismiss this whole thing as unavoidable when it’s possible someone’s negligence led to the victim losing their life.
