A quote I saw a few times across multiple reports was from the authorities saying officers “interviewed many witnesses and collected all available evidence.” To be rather blunt, that’s a statement I would never take at face value. It’s entirely possible authorities are being thorough here, taking every possible step to get the victim’s loved ones clear answers. But the reality is not every department has the experience or the state-of-the-art tools that a commercial vehicle accident investigation may require. I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases over the years, and efforts from independent accident reconstructionists often show authorities missed important details. In fact, they often answer questions that authorities never even bothered asking.
What was the visibility like at the time of the accident? Are there nearby security cameras that captured the collision on video? Are accidents common on this stretch of road? Are there trees or objects that reduce visibility at this intersection? Did the accident involve an inexperienced driver or a driver with a history of reckless behavior? Were authorities able to pull any video footage from the bus, or did they just let the bus leave the scene without preserving any important evidence?
Sometimes, independent investigations show that authorities got all the facts, and no stone was left unturned. Even that can be a significant weight off of a family’s mind. A lot of times, though, independent investigations can show there were details that authorities let slip through the cracks. The sooner a family can get access to that information, the sooner they can work toward a fair resolution.
