Commentary by Attorney Mike Grossman
Moments of silence often follow tragic crashes, but that pause should never become the end of the story. Behind every wreck are layers of unanswered questions, and when someone loses their life, those questions deserve real scrutiny, not assumptions.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? When a vehicle rolls during a turn, it raises concerns about whether the crash was looked at with enough depth. Did investigators use laser mapping to reconstruct the turn’s dynamics? Did they examine the driver’s speed, line of travel and actions leading up to the rollover? In some cases, quick conclusions are drawn without enough analysis, especially in rural areas where resources may be limited. The level of training among responding officers can make a huge difference in how the evidence is gathered and interpreted.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? With older vehicles, especially SUVs known for higher centers of gravity, there’s a real need to look into potential mechanical issues. A sudden loss of steering, worn suspension or even brake trouble could easily go unnoticed unless someone takes the time to inspect the wreckage carefully. Just because nothing looks obviously broken doesn’t mean there wasn’t a failure inside the systems that keep the vehicle stable during turns.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Even a 1998 model might hold useful clues. Some aftermarket parts or accessories could log data, and the driver’s phone or GPS might show patterns of speed or movement. Did she brake? Was there a sudden swerve? Without pulling that digital thread, key parts of the story can remain hidden. Nearby traffic or security cameras might also provide visual confirmation of what happened, especially on a road like that.
Hard questions like these aren’t about assigning blame. They’re about making sure no stone is left unturned. Lives can’t be brought back, but deeper investigations can keep others from ending the same way.
Key Takeaways:
- Not all crash scenes are examined with the same level of detail. Some need deeper follow-up.
- Mechanical issues in older vehicles can be hidden unless someone checks thoroughly.
- Electronic data from phones or GPS devices can reveal crucial details about what happened.
