One thing to consider is that investigating a crash like this is rarely as simple as people think. They figure the fewer vehicles involved, the more straight-forward things are. But these accidents can involve very complex factors authorities aren’t always equipped to look into on their own.
Were there mechanical defects? Road design flaws? Missing signage or lighting? Was there a driver illegally over-served by an alcohol provider? Did some other reckless driver cause the crash and leave the scene? Did the airbags and seatbelts function as expected? Common or not, investigators need to be able to look into these possibilities. Otherwise, something important might slip through the cracks.
