How Did This Accident Occur?
When commercial vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide, it’s usually because one of them left its lane, so figuring out which one did so in this case likely will be the focus of the ongoing investigation. But perhaps more importantly, investigators must figure out why the truck that left its lane did so.
Was the driver districted, maybe by a cell phone? Or did one of the trucks have a mechanical issue that affected its steering mechanism?
Cell phone data likely can answer the first question, since it will show if one the drivers was texting or making a call at the time of the crash, but the other question may need to be answered by an outside expert, since many law enforcement agencies lack the time or expertise for an thorough mechanical examination of vehicles involved in a crash. Their primary focus often is on documenting the scene and clearing wreckage so traffic can resume.
