Houston, TX — June 16, 2024, Frank Mungia, Mary Mungia, and one other were possibly injured after a car accident at midnight on Katy Freeway.

According to initial details about the accident, it happened in the area of Taylor Street.

Frank Mungia, Mary Mungia Possibly Injured in Car Accident in Houston, TX

Investigators said that 73-year-old Frank Mungia and 66-year-old Mary Mungia were in a Mitsubishi Outlander going eastbound on the freeway. While doing so, it appears a Land Rover going high speeds crashed into a Chevy Suburban, then crashed into the Mitsubishi.

As a result of the crash, the Land Rover driver had reportedly serious injuries. Authorities say Frank and Mary Mungia were possibly injured, as well.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When high-speed crashes happen on major highways, especially at night, the key issue is often not just what happened—but whether the investigation uncovered all the contributing factors.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?

A sequence involving multiple impacts and high speeds demands close analysis. That includes confirming how fast each vehicle was going, how many collisions occurred, and whether evasive actions were attempted. It’s unclear whether investigators took the time to reconstruct all of that or just relied on visible damage.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?

At that speed, even a small mechanical issue—like brake failure or instability in steering—can turn dangerous quickly. If no one conducted a full inspection of the Land Rover, there’s no way to know whether the driver was dealing with more than just a loss of control.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?

Vehicle data could clarify speed, braking effort, and steering input before each collision. Phone use and dashcam footage could also help confirm whether distraction or reaction time played a role—if that information was retrieved in time.

Even when fault seems obvious, victims and families need to be able to tell the whole story. That means going beyond simple blame and instead focusing on the facts. Did that happen here?

Takeaways:

  • It’s not clear whether the crash sequence was fully reconstructed.
  • A mechanical failure might explain why the Land Rover couldn’t avoid impact.
  • Data from the vehicles or surrounding area could clarify key details—if anyone preserved it.
