Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Following any serious car accident, one of the main concerns is making sure the crash gets the attention it needs. Unfortunately, authorities can’t always be relied upon to that end. This is why I’ve found a few key questions that can help determine if investigations are in the right hands.
Did investigators have the time, tools, and training to fully analyze the crash? Single-vehicle accidents often don’t receive the same level of scrutiny as multi-vehicle wrecks, and if authorities lacked resources or moved on too quickly, key details may have been overlooked. Were road conditions, visibility, and possible evasive maneuvers carefully examined?
Did they consider whether a vehicle defect played a role? A sudden loss of control could point to issues like brake failure, steering malfunctions, or tire blowouts. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags didn’t function properly, the crash could have been far worse than it should have been. Was the vehicle inspected before critical evidence was lost?
Did authorities gather all available electronic data? The pickup’s Engine Control Module (ECM) may contain valuable information on speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. GPS records, cellphone activity, and any nearby security or traffic camera footage could also provide further insights. Have investigators secured this information before it’s lost?
If authorities can provide satisfactory answers, it’s a good sign they’re being thorough in their efforts. If they can’t, that may be a sign that a second set of eyes would reveal important details authorities overlooked. Either way, these questions can help a victim’s loved ones determine if they feel they’re getting the answers they deserve.
