According to authorities, 42-year-old Ernesto Duran Jr. was traveling in a northeast GMC Sierra pickup truck on Long Avenue at the State Highway 199 intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the GMC allegedly entered the intersection at an unsafe time. Duran and the man from the Pontiac reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people, upon hearing about accidents where a vehicle allegedly enters a controlled intersection at an unsafe time, are quick to point the finger at the driver. I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years, though. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, as a general rule, I don’t jump to conclusions.

That’s not to imply that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. A simple Google Maps search will show you that this intersection is controlled by a traffic signal. I hope the authorities look into whether or not the signal itself was working properly at the time of the wreck. These signals, while excellent tools, are not infallible. What if it gave contradicting signals to the drivers involved, at that was the reason behind the collision?

Hopefully the authorities are openminded enough to consider the possibility and look into it. If their work seems shortsighted in any way, then a third party investigation can always be brought on to take up the slack. Besides, it never hurts to have a second perspective go over things in order to ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks.

In the end, the people affected by this accident deserve real answers backed by solid evidence. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
