How Did This Accident Occur?

Reports don’t mention any co-workers involved in this incident, so people might be quick to assume the worker is the only one who could have made a mistake. I certainly don’t know what caused this accident, but there could be other people involved even if they weren’t at the work site.

For example, was a utilities company supposed to turn off power lines? Was the worker using proper protective equipment, or did he work for an employer that was enforcing proper safety procedures? Was the worker misinformed by an inaccurate map of underground utilities?

It’s important to answer these questions not just to ensure there’s accountability where appropriate but also to ensure the victim’s loved ones have as much information as possible going forward. Texas has the most complex work fatality laws in the whole country, and there isn’t always some automatic process going on behind the scenes to get families the benefits they need. That might be on the other side of a lengthy legal maze, which is something that requires a lot of evidence and legal tools to properly navigate.

So, while I can’t say what exactly went wrong here, I can’t easily trust that authorities are looking into all of that on their own. It’s possible there’s a lot more going on here than a typical accident investigation can address without input from independent professionals.
