Edderick Penton Killed in Work Accident in Houston, TX

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Most recent statements from OSHA clearly said that “the slabs were not stored in a secure manner to prevent them from falling.” If true, that could explain what went wrong here. But the real question the victim’s loved ones deserve answers to is why that happened. People that don’t work in these industries often shake their head at workers who appear to be flouting safety rules or working without proper equipment.

As much as that happens, folks that do these difficult, thankless jobs know that it’s often employers that fail to provide workers with proper safety equipment, don’t provide supervision on work sites, and otherwise fail to take the well-being of their own employees into consideration. Perhaps whatever employer was involved here did all they could, but clearly there were shortcomings here, and it’s important to make sure those shortcomings are addressed before more people get hurt.
