Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With one driver being blamed for the crash, people may assume this is all open-and-shut. But every crash with serious outcomes needs serious investigations. It’s important to be certain nothing unusual is slipping through the cracks.
For example, one factor stands out to me reading these preliminary reports. It seems only one person was seriously injured here. Sometimes, that’s nothing unusual. Other times, though, it can be a sign that something was wrong with the victim’s vehicle.
If, for instance, their seatbelt or airbag failed to function properly, the victim may have suffered serious injuries when they otherwise would have been okay. That may not be all too common, but it’s not unheard of, either. That’s why proper accident reconstructionists should include a close inspection of a victim’s vehicle.
Again, it’s possible nothing unusual happened here. But if authorities never even bothered considering why only one person was hurt in this crash, that could be a sign they’re not really giving the accident the close attention it deserves.
