Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With the allegations this accident involved an intoxicated driver, I have to wonder if authorities have continued efforts beyond that driver’s alleged actions alone. As important as it is for intoxicated driver to be held accountable, it may be only part of the larger story. Many serious intoxicated driver accidents involve people unlawfully over-served by a bar, for example. Negligent alcohol providers can potentially face criminal investigations, administrative penalties, or liability when their actions contribute to people being hurt or killed. But if authorities simply move on once there’s a driver facing charges, they might overlook this and let those alcohol providers slip through the cracks. If nothing else, families affected by an accident like this deserve to know there will be accountability for all parties involved. Are those steps being taken?
