Depending on the part of Texas you’re in, seeing a cow or bull wandering in or through the road might not even come as a surprise. There’s plenty of ranches scattered all over the state, but livestock sometimes feels the urge to roam—and that can be a big problem when half a ton of beef ends up in the path of someone’s car.

From a legal perspective a bull in the road is a little like dropping a boat there: Someone probably owns it, it shouldn’t be there, and hitting it will cause serious problems. Just like leaving a boat in the road would be negligent on its owner’s part, farmers or ranchers letting animals roam off their property may have to answer for any harm those animals do.

There are still many urgent questions about this crash, like where the bull came from, how it got out, how long it was loose, how fast the car was traveling, what the driver was doing, and many others. In truth, preliminary reports barely scratch the surface of exactly how a man lost his life in Freestone County. His loved ones deserve some real answers about how that happened; will someone make sure they get them?
